A NiMH Battery is also better known as nickel metal hydride battery. This kind of a battery uses an element which is hydrogen based. The main difference between a nickel cadmium battery and nickel metal battery is that hydrogen is used in place of cadmium. These batteries can have almost 2 to 3 times the normal capacity of an equivalent size nickel-cadmium battery. If compared to a lithium ion cell then the energy density is moderately low and the self charger is much higher. They are used for small applications such as cameras, mobile phones, electric razors and electric toothbrushes. They are also used for batteries in cars and medical equipments.
These batteries are used for mostly consumer appliances that are not very expensive and can be used n our day to day lives. They are proven to be environment friendly batteries. These are available in both rechargeable and non rechargeable forms. So it depends on us as to what we prefer to buy but many prefer a rechargeable one so that we can keep charging it as long as it lasts. But the only problem is that unlike normal alkaline rechargeable batteries these NiMH rechargeable ones do not last really long. Their capacity keeps diminishing with use.
The automobile industry too, is heavily depended on these NiMH batteries. Almost every electric plug in a few high ended cars uses NiMH batteries. The technology of the NiMH battery is now used extensively with rechargeable batteries for normal electronics used by the customers on a day to day basis.
